AV8ing
(aay veee ate ing)
VERB; the process in which a flathead Ford V8 is added to a Model A Ford chassis

EXAMPLE: "I was thinking about AV8ing this old roadster pickup!

So I haven't done this yet, at least as of 7/17/23, so I did a bit of researchin'. Here's a collection of pictures, ideas, possibly even correspondence from previous AV8ers, if they feel so inclined to pass on pearls of wisdom.

Standing back and looking at it doesn't seem real complicated at all. There's really only a couple real difficulties in doin' this.

First, actually mounting the thing;

Then steering box to exhaust issues;

Then what to do for pedals;

Then MISC. Yep, the dreaded MISC.

I gathered a buncha pictures for brainstorming purposes and categorized them below. If you own this pictures and want credit, or would like to expand on the AV8 information base, please let me know!

actually mounting the thing

first off, the '32-'48 Ford v8 3 speed transmission just bolts up to the Model A torque tube. you can literally just bolt a flathead 3 spd to the existing banjo and make your mounts on the frame.

mounting the engine side couldn't be easier, two brackets to catch the water pump ears

tranny is similar, although depending on year the transmission mounts are different.

transmission years 1932-1936 have a large rubber ring with a steel plate or donut, 1937-1948 have the two side tangs with holes, 10" apart on the '37-'41, 8" apart on the '42-'48

they all interchange though, so pick a favorite, bolt it to the back of your 3 speed and get to weldin'!

steering box to exhaust issues

what to do for pedals

I'm going present some 'old' options and a 'new option' in the pictures.

I found a used one of these, missing the hydraulic cylinders and hardware, I may modify a bit to make the clutch arm mechanical.

You can find them new on eBay under "Street Rod Clutch Pedal Assembly Brake Master Cylinder Under Floor". Another option if you don't mind the style.

For those wanting to go to a hydraulic setup there is information here:

misc

unsplit wishbone retention

firewall/oil breather/fuel pump clearance issue
